Admin tools
Open one admin section at a time. This keeps the admin page lighter and makes slow sections easier to spot.
Live operations
Active imports, queued work, completions and recent issues appear here automatically.
Demo accounts/groups make the site look busy for testing. Public UI shows them as normal travelers; only admins see the Demo badge. Purge removes demo-flagged records only.

Keep Find Flights limited to selected testers until you go live. Demo/manual search stays $0; Duffel only appears when a test token is configured.

Data operations
Setup the location database once, monitor automatic refreshes, and open on-demand tools only when you need a targeted import.
Read-only

Run once
Build the location foundation. Hide this category after both steps are complete.
Step A: download every country. Step B (optional): download packaged capital cities only. For the large world city list, use the GeoNames job below — not this button.
Countries first, then optional capitals. Bulk cities = GeoNames job below.
Recommended for bulk cities. Prepares the GeoNames cities15000 dump and imports city names in batches on the server. Default minimum population 50,000 (no town/village dump). Stop/resume anytime. Countries must exist first. Attribution: GeoNames CC BY 4.0.
Example: 50000 ≈ major cities. 15000 includes more of the GeoNames dump. 100000 stays stricter.
Job status will appear here after prepare or start.
Runs automatically
These jobs keep live travel data current. Manual controls are for monitoring and recovery.
Background job refreshes each country’s facts (languages, currency, dialing code, EU/Schengen) one-by-one. Exchange rates are handled by the separate schedule below. First run starts automatically after deploy; then on the 1st of each month at 02:00 Europe/Berlin (CEST/CET). You can also start/stop manually.
Monthly schedule and job status appear here.
Background job loads one EUR rate feed (Frankfurter + open feed) and updates every country’s stored exchange rate. First run starts after deploy; then every day at 06:00, 12:00 and 17:00 Europe/Berlin (CEST/CET).
Daily schedule and job status appear here.
Same pattern as the GeoNames city job: prepare the city queue first, then start/resume. Uses the editable OSM key=value tags below for every prepared city. Schedule: Monday 03:00 Europe/Berlin. Cities must exist first (step 2 above).
0 = all cities. Example: 50000 matches the GeoNames major-city default.
Use key=value tags (example tourism=museum). Keys and values are both used in the Overpass query.
Edit this list anytime. Prepare/start uses the saved tags for the city queue.
After the main run finishes, use Prepare retry queue then Start retry job to re-import cities that failed (for example dense metros that hit memory limits before r111).
Prepare the city queue first, then start. Cities run largest→smallest. Re-imports only download OSM objects changed since the last complete scan, and apply field differences (phone, website, hours, etc.) to existing places. Weekly schedule and job status appear here.
Choose which reference data the weekly job imports. Airports and traveler-useful embassies/consulates come from OpenStreetMap country by country. Existing records are matched before import and unchanged records are skipped. Schedule: Wednesday 03:00 Europe/Berlin.
Only checked types run. Countries reuse the packaged ISO reference updater. Cities, towns & suburbs starts the GeoNames world-city job (incl. suburb/section rows) and also imports OSM localities country by country — cities, towns, suburbs, neighbourhoods, quarters, boroughs, and similar — stored as city locations so places and experiences can attach to them.
Weekly selected-data schedule and progress appear here.
Automatic daily pass that hides imported places whose OSM key=value tags are no longer in the weekly auto-import tag list. Manual run is also on the Cleanup card under Places. Schedule: every day 04:00 Europe/Berlin.
Daily schedule and last cleanup result appear here.
Imports origin-government travel-safety advice for every destination country: GOV.UK Content API and the US State Department advisory RSS. Same prepare → start pattern as the city job. Schedule: Tuesday 03:00 Europe/Berlin.
Prepare feeds first, then start. Imported text appears under Travel safety advisories on country/city pages.
Use when needed
Target one dataset, country, or city without rerunning the global setup.
Idle. Start to download embassies/consulates for every country with progress. Interrupted runs resume from the saved country offset.
Optional city/area preview for targeted review. Prefer a capital (for example Pretoria). Preview sample size is for UI readability only — the all-countries job above never truncates.
Choose a host country and preferably its capital city (e.g. Pretoria), then preview.
Duplicates are updated by OpenStreetMap source ID. Every import is recorded in the audit log, and travelers retain an official-source verification link.
Use this to repair or extend cities from OpenStreetMap after the global GeoNames setup. It imports cities only—not towns or villages. Prefer the GeoNames world city job for first-time bulk setup.
Idle. Start to download OSM cities for every country with progress.
Example: 1000000 imports cities with 1 million people or more. Set 0 to include all downloaded cities. Applies to both all-countries and single-country runs.
Select a country, choose a minimum population, then download cities. Already-downloaded cities are skipped internally.
Add a place category for one city. Eligible records are deduplicated and published immediately as Admin-imported content.
Use a higher value when the first 100 are already downloaded. The app still skips duplicates and publishes Admin-imported places immediately.
Normal Places imports only download objects whose OSM key is in this editable list. Default: tourism, amenity.
Only allowed keys are imported by the normal Places button. Specific place search remains the manual exception path.
Select a city, category, and maximum candidates, then use the button. Admin-downloaded places go live immediately.
Manual cleanups for already-imported OSM places. These hide listings; they do not hard-delete them. The stale-tag job also runs daily at 04:00 Europe/Berlin.
Excluded-type cleanup covers memorials, plaques, graves, cemeteries, signposts, and similar. Stale-tag cleanup hides imports whose OSM tags are no longer in the weekly auto-import list.
Use this only when you intentionally want one or a few excluded/special places. Admin-imported specific places go live immediately.
Specific searches allow excluded types manually. Admin-imported specific places go live immediately.
Create or refresh traveler-facing essentials. User-created advice remains separate and still requires review.
Idle. Start to refresh Country Essentials for every country with progress.
Import order: identity, core facts, currency/exchange, weather, emergency numbers, drinking water, local laws, entry requirements, travel restrictions, internet/mobile, biggest cities, popular travel cities, top attractions.
Source priority: government/official sources for safety, legal, and entry data; Wikidata/Wikipedia-style structured sources for stable country facts; OSM for geography/places; specialist APIs for weather/exchange rates; Admin-curated data for rankings.
Select a country or city, then create/refresh visible Admin Country Essentials.
Content model: Locations are platform-owned reference destinations for search, advice, places, and experiences.
Read-only validation
Inspect the imported countries and capital/city records before planning larger import systems. This does not write data or trigger imports.

Use Locations for countries and cities, or Places for restaurants and attractions. On a country page, states and provinces list major cities you can open from the province card; a plane icon marks cities with passenger airports—click it to jump to Getting there and filter that city’s airports. When filtered, other cities with airports appear as chips so you can switch without scrolling back to States. Full airport details are in the Airports section on that page. Places and city search on Locations use Universal Finder: local results first; OpenStreetMap search and import require a signed-in account with verified email that is active. On a city page, Nearby & worth it suggests nearby cities that already have places or experiences.
Universal Finder is the sitewide search pattern for directory objects. On Places, search your selected country or city first in our directory. If your venue is missing — even when other local results appear — use the Not in the list? panel to Search OpenStreetMap, pick the correct match to import public facts, then open its place page. On Locations with type Country, search the imported country directory (name or code, continent filter, A–Z or popularity) with no OpenStreetMap step. On Locations with type City, search the city directory, then optionally import a settlement from OpenStreetMap (the parent country must already exist) and open its city page. Experiences and Airlines use the same local-directory Finder (no OpenStreetMap import). OpenStreetMap search and import require sign-in, a verified email, and an active account.
Create a free account to save private trips and pins. Pin a city, place, or embassy/consulate from its card or open page (or from search results) to keep it on your Dashboard. Upcoming trips can show destination weather when dates and location are set. Privacy controls are under My Profile.
Find flights on a trip is in limited testing for selected travelers, unless live search is turned on for everyone. You can always add flights manually.
This is an experimental traveler assist. If you were invited into the test, use the Not in the list? panel on Places to paste a venue website (also available after OpenStreetMap finds nothing). We only read public page metadata to prefill a manual submission — you still confirm city and place type, then staff review before publication. Reliability is still being proven.
Under Airlines you will find each airline’s homepage, country of origin, and service phone numbers when listed. Signed-in travelers can like or review. Check the airline’s own website for baggage and miles details. Featured ads may appear.
Some places show when they are usually quieter or when a visit is best — for example weekday mornings. Curated tips come from admins or place owners. Signed-in travelers can also answer “Was it quiet when you visited?” with Quiet, Mixed, or Busy. These are community signals, not live crowd data from Google or other services.
On supported phones and desktops you can install The Helpful Travelers from your browser. When your browser offers installation, a short Install app prompt may appear at the bottom of the page — choose Install, or Not now to dismiss. You can also use the browser menu (Add to Home Screen / Install app). The installable app opens in a simple window and keeps a light offline page if your connection drops. Full offline browsing of places is not included yet.
Moderators and admins can open Moderator Center to review recent experiences and comments, warn or suspend accounts, and see a short summary of restricted users, hidden experiences, and removed comments. Every action needs a written reason.
Join or create traveler groups for tips, photos and local discussion. Guides stay curated — Groups are for conversation. Keep posts respectful and report harmful content.
Approved experiences, place reviews, guides and group posts earn points (drafts and pending do not). Likes and Helpful votes add more. Higher ranks take progressively more points.
Owners can claim a place and explore Licensed plans. While Early Access is on, approved claims may unlock Licensed tools at no charge. Featured ads are sold separately; Licensed Plus can include a limited intro city advert.
Where available, use Translate on group posts, reviews and similar content to read them in your interface language.
Under My Profile you can pick a website theme. Light/Dark applies only to Classic and Plum Mist (including Plum Mist Motion). Fixed palette themes keep their own colours, so Light/Dark is hidden for those.
