Place lifecycle and approval model

Admin imports via Import Tools go live. Owner-submitted changes (when enabled later) stay pending until approved. Public users should only see an approved version of owner-edited listings.

Safe Next Steps

Use Import Tools for all normal location/place/essentials imports.
Prefer GeoNames world city job for bulk cities; use OSM city download only for one country.
Review place claims under Admin → Places; keep owner-edit approval as a later gate.
Plan Experiences moderation separately from reference-data imports.
Promote to stable only after a separate checklist and explicit approval.

Admin import path

Import Tools

Start with world countries (and optional capitals), then the GeoNames city job, then places auto-import (prepare city queue → start). Country facts and exchange rates run on their own schedules. Optional one-country OSM tools are below.

1. World countries & capital cities

Step A: download every country. Step B (optional): download packaged capital cities only. For the large world city list, use the GeoNames job below — not this button.

2. World city import job (GeoNames)

Recommended for bulk cities. Prepares the GeoNames cities15000 dump and imports city names in batches on the server. Default minimum population 50,000 (no town/village dump). Stop/resume anytime. Countries must exist first. Attribution: GeoNames CC BY 4.0.

Example: 50000 ≈ major cities. 15000 includes more of the GeoNames dump. 100000 stays stricter.

Country facts monthly refresh

Background job refreshes each country’s facts (languages, currency, dialing code, EU/Schengen) one-by-one. Exchange rates are handled by the separate schedule below. First run starts automatically after deploy; then on the 1st of each month at 02:00 Europe/Berlin (CEST/CET). You can also start/stop manually.

Exchange rates refresh

Background job loads one EUR rate feed (Frankfurter + open feed) and updates every country’s stored exchange rate. First run starts after deploy; then every day at 06:00, 12:00 and 17:00 Europe/Berlin (CEST/CET).

3. Places weekly auto-import

Same pattern as the GeoNames city job: prepare the city queue first, then start/resume. Uses the editable OSM key=value tags below for every prepared city. Schedule: Monday 03:00 Europe/Berlin. Cities must exist first (step 2 above).

Minimum city population

0 = all cities. Example: 50000 matches the GeoNames major-city default.

Use key=value tags (example tourism=museum). Keys and values are both used in the Overpass query.

Edit this list anytime. Prepare/start uses the saved tags for the city queue.

After the main run finishes, use Prepare retry queue then Start retry job to re-import cities that failed (for example dense metros that hit memory limits before r111).

Prepare the city queue first, then start. Cities run largest→smallest. Re-imports only download OSM objects changed since the last complete scan, and apply field differences (phone, website, hours, etc.) to existing places. Weekly schedule and job status appear here.

3b. Stale OSM tag cleanup (scheduled)

Automatic daily pass that hides imported places whose OSM key=value tags are no longer in the weekly auto-import tag list. Manual run is also on the Cleanup card under Places. Schedule: every day 04:00 Europe/Berlin.

4. Travel safety advisories import (UK + US)

Imports origin-government travel-safety advice for every destination country: GOV.UK Content API and the US State Department advisory RSS. Same prepare → start pattern as the city job. Schedule: Tuesday 03:00 Europe/Berlin.

Prepare feeds first, then start. Imported text appears under Travel safety advisories on country/city pages.

Example: 1000000 imports cities with 1 million people or more. Set 0 to include all downloaded cities.

Places (OSM for a city)

Select country → city → place type. Downloads clean eligible OSM places for that city and publishes them immediately as Admin-imported content.

Use a higher value when the first 100 are already downloaded. The app still skips duplicates and publishes Admin-imported places immediately.

Cleanup

Manual cleanups for already-imported OSM places. These hide listings; they do not hard-delete them. The stale-tag job also runs daily at 04:00 Europe/Berlin.

Excluded-type cleanup covers memorials, plaques, graves, cemeteries, signposts, and similar. Stale-tag cleanup hides imports whose OSM tags are no longer in the weekly auto-import list.

Use this only when you intentionally want one or a few excluded/special places. Admin-imported specific places go live immediately.

Country Essentials / Advice

Select a country and optional city. Creates or refreshes visible Admin-imported Country Essentials. User-created advice still requires review.

Country City Import mode

Import order: identity, core facts, currency/exchange, weather, emergency numbers, drinking water, local laws, entry requirements, travel restrictions, internet/mobile, biggest cities, popular travel cities, top attractions.

Source priority: government/official sources for safety, legal, and entry data; Wikidata/Wikipedia-style structured sources for stable country facts; OSM for geography/places; specialist APIs for weather/exchange rates; Admin-curated data for rankings.

Country safety and emergency contacts

Emergency contacts are primarily country-level. Add city-specific overrides only when local numbers or local guidance are different. Admin-entered entries are public by default, but can be hidden or deleted if outdated.

Advice document management
