City guide

Zürich

Zürich pairs a compact, walkable old town split by the Limmat river with a lake that reaches right into the city and a local mountain a short train ride away — a Swiss city break that mixes churches, art museums and outdoor time without long transfers.

Country
Switzerland
Ideal stay
2–3 days
Best for
Old-town churches and viewpoints, lakefront walks, art and history museums, an easy mountain day trip, walkable car-free sightseeing
Typical daily budget
Switzerland is expensive by European standards; plan on roughly CHF 150–300 per person per day before accommodation, and treat this as a planning estimate rather than a fixed figure.
Best months
April–June and September–October usually balance comfortable walking weather with the lake and Uetliberg viewpoints still clear; midsummer is warm and busy, winter is quiet but colder and greyer for outdoor sightseeing.
Airport to center
The train from Zürich Airport to Zürich Hauptbahnhof (main station) takes about 15 minutes, with departures roughly every 10 minutes through the day.
Public transport
Trams, buses, S-Bahn trains and lake boats are coordinated under the ZVV network and cover the city and region well. The old town, lakefront and Bahnhofstrasse are all walkable from each other; use transit for Uetliberg, the Zoo and outlying neighborhoods.
Walkability
Very good in the old town on both banks of the Limmat, along Bahnhofstrasse and around the lake promenade near Bürkliplatz. Use the train for Uetliberg rather than walking up.
Main language
Swiss German (Zürich dialect); standard German is used in writing, and English is widely spoken in tourist-facing settings.

Why travelers love it

A compact old town split by a river

Grossmünster, Fraumünster, St. Peter and the Lindenhof terrace sit within a short walk of each other across the Limmat, making Zürich's historic core easy to see without long transfers.

A city that meets the lake and mountains

Bahnhofstrasse runs straight down to the lakefront at Bürkliplatz, and the Uetliberg summit — reached directly by train from the main station — adds a genuine mountain viewpoint to a city break.

Major museums close to the station

The Kunsthaus (art) and Landesmuseum (Swiss history) are both within easy walking distance of the old town and Zürich HB, useful for a museum stop on an arrival or departure day.

Choose your area

  • Altstadt – Niederdorf side — The east-bank old town behind Grossmünster: narrow lanes, restaurants and bars, liveliest in the evening.
  • Altstadt – Lindenhof side — The quieter west-bank old town around Fraumünster, St. Peter and the Lindenhof terrace viewpoint.
  • Kreis 4 & 5 (West) — Former industrial districts around Langstrasse and Escher-Wyss-Platz, now the center of Zürich's nightlife and converted-factory venues.
  • Seefeld — An upscale, mostly residential lakeside quarter east of the center, good for a quieter walk along the water.
  • Enge & Wollishofen — The lake's west shore south of the center, with public swimming spots (Seebad) and views back across the water.

Practical planning

Plan the airport transfer

Trains run from Zürich Airport directly to Zürich Hauptbahnhof roughly every 10 minutes, and the journey takes about 15 minutes — no need to book ahead.

Zürich Airport transport information

Consider the Zürich Card for short stays

For 24 or 72 hours, the Zürich Card covers unlimited second-class travel on trams, buses, trains and lake boats across the city and region, plus free or reduced admission to most Zürich museums.

Zürich Card, official page

Check the current Uetliberg routing before you go

Construction work has closed the SZU route between Zürich HB and Selnau from 29 April to 18 October 2026, which affects the direct S10 line to Uetliberg. Check the SZU site for the current alternative routing before planning that day trip.

SZU service notices

Plan shopping around Sunday closures

Most shops in Zürich, including along Bahnhofstrasse, are closed on Sundays. The main exceptions are the roughly 135 shops inside Zürich Hauptbahnhof and the shops at Zürich Airport, both open daily.

Zürich Tourism, shopping

Check Grossmünster's hours before visiting

The church is open 10:00–18:00 in summer (March–October) and 10:00–17:00 in winter, and is closed to visitors on Tuesdays. The main church space is free to enter; the tower climb has its own admission — check current times and prices before your visit.

Grossmünster, official site

Time a lake cruise from Bürkliplatz

ZSG boats depart from Bürkliplatz for scheduled cruises around Lake Zürich; check the current timetable, as frequency and routes vary by season.

ZSG (Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft)

Good to know

  • Switzerland is genuinely expensive — food, drinks and accommodation cost noticeably more than in most of the rest of Europe.
  • Most shops close on Sundays; the exceptions are the shops inside Zürich Hauptbahnhof and at the airport.
  • Grossmünster is closed to visitors on Tuesdays, so plan tower visits around that.
  • Construction work has closed the SZU line between Zürich HB and Selnau from 29 April to 18 October 2026, affecting the direct S10 route to Uetliberg — check szu.ch for the current alternative routing before planning that day trip.
