Why travelers love it

One of the world's most multicultural cities, on a plate

Toronto is regularly ranked among the world's most diverse cities, and neighborhoods like Kensington Market and Chinatown reflect that directly in food and street life — a level of genuinely international, affordable eating that's hard to match in a single city.

A skyline landmark with real engineering history

The CN Tower, completed in 1976 at 553.3 metres, was for decades the world's tallest freestanding structure and remains an engineering icon, with a glass floor, high-altitude SkyPod, and the EdgeWalk hands-free ledge walk for those who want more than a view.

Victorian industrial architecture turned car-free arts district

The Distillery District preserves the largest collection of Victorian-era industrial architecture in North America — more than 40 buildings from the former Gooderham and Worts whisky distillery, now a pedestrian-only National Historic Site filled with galleries, boutiques and restaurants rather than a museum piece behind glass.

Practical planning

Book CN Tower tickets online in advance

CN Tower tickets are cheaper booked online in advance than at the door, and advance booking lets visitors skip the ticket line. The tower is typically open daily from around 9am, though hours vary seasonally — check the official schedule before visiting.

Official source

ROM has free admission one evening a month

The Royal Ontario Museum is open Monday–Thursday and weekends 10am–5:30pm, and Friday until 8:30pm. Admission is free on the third Tuesday evening of each month, from 4pm to 8:30pm — a good option for budget travelers who can time their visit.

Official source

St. Lawrence Market's South building is closed Mondays

St. Lawrence Market's main South Market building is closed on Mondays. Saturday brings the busiest farmers' market atmosphere, and Sunday adds an antique market — both are the liveliest times to visit but also the most crowded.

Official source

Toronto Island ferries get crowded at peak times

The Toronto Islands are only reachable by ferry from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal (or water taxi). Peak travel times are roughly 10am–3pm heading to the islands and 5–9pm returning, when waits can exceed 30–60 minutes — going earlier or later in the day avoids the worst of it.

Official source

Casa Loma has a firm last-entry time

Casa Loma is open daily 9:30am to 5pm, but last entry is at 4pm — arriving right at closing time means being turned away rather than getting a quick look, since the self-guided route through the castle and grounds takes real time.

Good to know

  • Winters are cold and can involve significant snow.
  • Downtown accommodation can be expensive, especially during major events.
  • The city is large and spread out beyond the downtown core, so factor in transit time for outer neighborhoods.
