City guide

Tehran

Iran's sprawling capital sits at the foot of the Alborz mountains, its northern districts climbing toward cooler air while the historic center holds palaces, bazaars, and museums reflecting Persia's long history. Tehran is a huge, traffic-heavy metropolis, but its Golestan Palace, Grand Bazaar, and world-class museums reward a couple of days before heading to Iran's more famous historic cities.

Why travelers love it

A UNESCO-listed Qajar royal complex in the middle of the city

Golestan Palace served as the official royal complex of the Qajar dynasty from 1794 to 1925, rebuilt to its present form by 1865. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, its highlights include the mirror-tiled Mirror Hall (Ayeneh-kari) and the Marble Throne terrace, built between 1747 and 1751.

A 10-kilometer covered bazaar that's still Tehran's commercial heart

The Tehran Grand Bazaar's corridors extend over 10 kilometers combined, each specializing in different goods, with mosques, banks and traditional teahouses woven through the complex — a working marketplace rather than a museum piece, largely built up during Reza Shah's 20th-century modernization on top of much older origins.

A monument built for a 2,500-year anniversary, now the symbol of the city

Azadi Tower was completed in 1971 to mark the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire. Its roughly 45-meter marble-clad structure blends classical Sasanian arches with later Persian medieval arch forms, connected by ribbed vaulting — a deliberate architectural bridge across two eras of Persian history.

Practical planning

Iran's current US and UK travel advisory levels — read before planning any trip

The US State Department rates Iran Level 4: Do Not Travel, citing terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and arbitrary arrest or wrongful detention risk for US citizens; there is no US Embassy in Iran, and the Swiss Embassy acts as the protecting power for US interests. UK FCDO guidance is the most restrictive rating it issues: it advises against all travel to the entire country of Iran, not just specific regions. This is a serious, country-wide advisory — check the current guidance directly from an official source before making any plans, rather than relying on this or any other general travel content.

Golestan Palace's UNESCO listing and Mirror Hall

Golestan Palace became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 as a group of eight palatial structures surrounded by a wall. Its Mirror Hall (Ayeneh-kari), with intricate mirror-work covering the walls and ceiling, is the single most photographed interior in the complex.

The Grand Bazaar's scale

Tehran's Grand Bazaar is genuinely large enough to get lost in, with corridors totaling over 10 kilometers and each section specializing in a specific category of goods, from textiles to gold to spices, alongside religious and banking spaces built into the complex.

Milad Tower's observation deck

At 435 meters, Milad Tower is the tallest structure in Iran and the sixth-tallest telecommunication tower in the world, completed in 2007 and officially opened in October 2008, with an observation deck and revolving restaurant in its 12-floor head structure.

Dress code and cash planning

Modest dress is required in public, including a headscarf for women. International sanctions mean foreign debit and credit cards generally do not work in Iran, so plan to bring sufficient cash for the entire trip and arrange currency exchange before or on arrival.

Getting in from Imam Khomeini International Airport

Imam Khomeini International Airport sits about 35km from central Tehran, connected by taxi or the metro, typically 45-60 minutes depending on traffic and time of day.

Good to know

  • Heavy traffic and air pollution, especially in winter; dress codes apply, particularly for women; international sanctions complicate card payments, so cash planning is essential.
