Taiwan's capital pairs the record-breaking Taipei 101 skyscraper with an exceptional night market food scene, the world-class National Palace Museum, and easy access to hot springs in the surrounding hills. Taipei is clean, safe, and extremely easy to navigate by metro, making it one of Asia's most approachable capital cities.

Taipei 101 was the world's tallest building from its 2004 completion until 2010. Its 730-tonne tuned mass damper, a giant steel ball visible from an indoor viewing platform, sways to counteract wind and seismic movement — a rare case where a building's engineering is itself a visitor attraction.
The National Palace Museum holds roughly 700,000 artifacts, largely evacuated from Beijing's Forbidden City collection in 1948-1949 during the Chinese Civil War — including internationally famous pieces like the Jadeite Cabbage and the Meat-shaped Stone.
Taipei's dense night market culture (Ximending, Shilin and others) sits a short MRT ride from Beitou, a hillside hot spring district with public and private thermal baths dating to the Japanese colonial era — a combination of city energy and easy escape that's unusually convenient.

Taoyuan International Airport is about 40km west of central Taipei. The Taoyuan Airport MRT line connects both terminals directly to Taipei Main Station, generally the fastest and most reliable option compared to bus or taxi in traffic.
Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport — WikipediaThe tower stands 508 meters over 101 floors. Its tuned mass damper — a 5.5-meter, 660-tonne ball made of 41 welded steel plates — is visible from the indoor observatory on floors 88-89. Outdoor decks are on the 91st and 101st floors; buy tickets at the 5th-floor mall or online in advance.
Taipei 101 — WikipediaWith roughly 700,000 artifacts and only about 1% on display at any given time, exhibits rotate — what's shown on one visit may differ from another. The 1948-1949 evacuation from Nanjing to Keelung moved 2,972 crates, about 22% of what was originally transported, but included many of the finest pieces.
National Palace Museum — WikipediaFounded in 1738, the temple was struck during the Taihoku Air Raid on 31 May 1945 when American bombers targeted the site (reportedly over concealed Japanese military equipment nearby), destroying significant artifacts including a Shakyamuni statue. It was rebuilt after the war and remains one of Taipei's most active temples.
Longshan Temple (Taipei) — WikipediaThe Xiangshan (Elephant Mountain) hiking trail near Xinyi District is popular specifically for its Taipei 101 skyline view, especially at sunset — but the stone steps climb steadily and can be crowded at peak viewing times, so budget more time than the short trail length suggests.
Taiwan Tourism AdministrationBeitou's hot spring culture dates to the Japanese colonial era; the 1913 bathhouse (now the Beitou Hot Spring Museum) documents this history. Modern visitors can choose between inexpensive public bathing pools and private-room hotel/spa options nearby.
