Why travelers love it

The world's largest office building, purpose-built for diamonds

Surat Diamond Bourse opened in December 2023 as a nine-tower complex spanning about 660,000 square meters — officially recognized by Guinness World Records for surpassing the Pentagon — and centralizes an industry that processes roughly 90% of the world's diamonds.

A 16th-century fortress built to keep the Portuguese out

Surat Castle was built in 1540–1546 by Khudawand Khan on the Tapi riverbank after repeated Portuguese raids had burned the city; restored and reopened to visitors in September 2022, with excavations along the way uncovering an even older Tughlaq-era fort beneath it.

Dutch and Armenian tombs from the East India Company era

The Dutch Garden preserves a cemetery of imposing 17th-century mausoleums built by Dutch and Armenian traders — most notably the double-cupola tomb of Baron Adriaan van Reede, who died in 1691 — a tangible trace of Surat's centuries as a major trading port.

Practical planning

Surat Castle reopened to visitors in 2022 after years of restoration

Restoration ran from 2015 to 2022, with the fort inaugurated for visitors that September; the square artillery fortress was originally built 1540–1546 by Khudawand Khan following Portuguese raids that burned the city in 1512 and 1531.

The Surat Diamond Bourse is a working trade hub, not a tourist site

Most visitors view the nine-tower complex from outside rather than touring the interior — it functions as a diamond-trading center with 4,200 offices, though its scale (recognized by Guinness World Records in August 2023) makes it worth the detour near the airport.

Official source

Sarthana Nature Park & Zoo closes on Mondays

Gujarat's largest zoo, opened in 1984 on 81 acres, keeps regular hours of 10am–5pm but is closed every Monday — plan a visit for another day of the week, and budget extra travel time since it sits on the city's northeastern edge.

Official source

The Dutch cemetery's tombs are protected but weathered

The Dutch and Armenian cemeteries at Gulam Falia near Katargam Gate are officially protected monuments, but visible weathering means it reads as a genuine heritage site rather than a manicured garden — the Dutch East India Company established its Surat factory in 1616.

Official source

Gujarat is a dry state

Alcohol sale and consumption are restricted under Gujarat's prohibition laws, and it's generally not available to casual visitors without a permit — factor this into evening plans in Surat.

Good to know

  • Surat is primarily a commercial and industrial hub, so it has fewer headline tourist sights than other major Indian destinations.
  • Gujarat is a dry state — alcohol is restricted and generally not available to casual visitors.
  • Summer heat (April–June) is intense.
