City guide

Singapore

Singapore is a compact, ultra-organized city-state where colonial-era shophouses, futuristic gardens, and some of Asia's best hawker food sit within a short, efficient MRT ride of each other, making it one of the easiest major Asian cities to navigate.

Why travelers love it

18 solar-powered 'Supertrees' that opened a new kind of city park

Gardens by the Bay opened on 29 June 2012 across 105 hectares, its 18 Supertrees ranging from 25 to 50 meters tall and doubling as environmental engines — collecting rainwater and generating solar power while supporting living plants across their structures, alongside the separately-ticketed Cloud Forest and Flower Dome conservatories.

A statue that's been Singapore's symbol since 1972

The 8.6-meter Merlion at Merlion Park was installed on 15 September 1972 by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. Its fish body recalls Singapore's origin as the fishing village of Temasek ('sea town'), while its lion head refers to the city's original name — a single statue combining both halves of the country's founding story.

Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, still standing in the middle of Chinatown

Sri Mariamman Temple was founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai, just eight years after the British trading settlement was established — making it Singapore's first and oldest Hindu temple, designated a National Monument in 1973 and still an active place of worship in the heart of today's Chinatown.

Drug laws are strict and strictly enforced

Singapore has severe, actively enforced penalties for drug offenses, including for evidence of drug use found in the body on arrival or in transit — this can lead to refusal of entry or arrest regardless of where the drug use occurred. It's one of the most consistently enforced legal areas for visitors to be aware of before traveling.

Gardens by the Bay's Supertree light show

The Supertree Grove runs a nightly light-and-sound show after dark, included with basic park entry (the elevated OCBC Skyway walkway between Supertrees and the Cloud Forest/Flower Dome conservatories are separately ticketed).

Gardens by the Bay — Wikipedia

Singapore Botanic Gardens is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Founded in 1859, the gardens became Singapore's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 — the only tropical garden in the world with that designation. Entry to most of the grounds is free; the National Orchid Garden inside charges separately.

Raffles Hotel and the Singapore Sling

Opened in 1887 and named after colonial founder Stamford Raffles, the hotel was designated a National Monument in 1987. Its Long Bar is where bartender Ngiam Tong Boon invented the Singapore Sling cocktail, and past guests have included writers such as Somerset Maugham.

Good to know

  • It's hot and humid year-round, so pace outdoor sightseeing accordingly.
  • Strict laws (littering, chewing gum, jaywalking) carry real fines — worth knowing before arrival.
  • As a small, well-developed city-state, costs (especially dining out and hotels) run higher than much of Southeast Asia.
