Saudi Arabia's capital has transformed rapidly into a global business and entertainment hub, its skyline now studded with landmark towers like the Kingdom Centre. Riyadh mixes ultra-modern development with historic sites like Diriyah, the birthplace of the Saudi state, and a fast-expanding restaurant and events scene as the country opens further to tourism.

At-Turaif District in Diriyah was the first capital of the Saudi state, founded in the 15th century and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 — its restored mudbrick walls sit on the edge of Wadi Hanifah, a 120km green valley threading through the city.
From the 267-meter Al Faisaliah Tower (2000) to the 302-meter Kingdom Centre (2002) with its glass Sky Bridge, Riyadh's skyline is a compressed timeline of Gulf architectural ambition, with King Salman Park now developing one of the world's largest urban parks on a former air base.
Al Masmak Fortress, built around 1865, is where a young Abdulaziz Ibn Saud led the 1902 raid that recaptured Riyadh and set the founding of the modern Saudi state in motion — a spear mark from that night is still visible in the fort's main door.

The airport sits about 35km north of central Riyadh. Riyadh Metro Line 4 began serving the airport on 1 December 2024, connecting Terminal 1-2, Terminal 3-4, and Terminal 5 stations to the wider metro network — a faster alternative to the roughly 30-40 minute taxi ride.
King Khalid International Airport — WikipediaBuilt around 1865, the clay-and-mudbrick Al Masmak Fortress was the site of Abdulaziz Ibn Saud's decisive 1902 raid against the ruling Al Rashid family, an event that set in motion the unification of what became Saudi Arabia in 1932.
Al Masmak Fortress — WikipediaAt-Turaif District in Diriyah was inscribed as Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, recognized as the original home of the Saudi royal family and the first Saudi state's capital before it fell in 1818.
At-Turaif District — WikipediaThe US State Department rates Saudi Arabia Level 3 (Reconsider Travel), citing the risk of Iranian drone/missile activity affecting US interests, regional armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans, and local laws around social media activity — this is a country-wide caution, not specific to Riyadh. The FCDO's only "avoid travel" zones are within 80km of the Yemen border, roughly 800km south of Riyadh. Travelers should be aware Saudi Arabia enforces strict local laws, including around alcohol, dress, and public behavior, and that some social media posts have led to prosecution — check current guidance before traveling.
Saudi Arabia Travel Advice — GOV.UK / FCDOCompleted in 2002 at 302 meters, the Kingdom Centre's distinctive inverted-parabola shape culminates in a glass Sky Bridge connecting its two towers at the 99th floor, open to the public as a paid observation deck.
Kingdom Centre — WikipediaOnce a polluted drainage route, the 120km Wadi Hanifah valley running through Riyadh has been rehabilitated since the 1990s into a landscaped corridor of lakes, parks, and walking trails, most developed near Diriyah.
