Quito

Quito is one of South America's oldest capitals and, at 2,850 meters, one of its highest — a UNESCO World Heritage historic center of gold-leafed churches set beneath the Pichincha volcano, a short ride from the equator itself.

Why travelers love it

One of the first two UNESCO World Heritage Sites ever listed

Quito's historic center was inscribed by UNESCO in 1978 — one of the very first sites on the list, alongside Kraków — recognized as the largest and best-preserved colonial center in the Americas, still centered on the 1534 refounding by Sebastián de Benalcázar and 204 settlers.

A church that took 160 years to finish, covered in 23-carat gold

The Church of La Compañía was begun in 1605 and not completed until 1765, blending Baroque, Mudéjar, Churrigueresque and Neoclassical styles built up over a century and a half — its interior surfaces layered in 23-carat gold leaf on a red ground, widely considered South America's finest Baroque interior.

A cable car and a monument that both put the city's geography on display

The TelefériQo climbs the slopes of the Pichincha volcano to nearly 4,000 meters for views over the whole Andean valley, while a half-day trip north reaches the Mitad del Mundo monument marking the equator — a reminder that Quito sits almost exactly on the line dividing Earth's hemispheres.

Getting in from Mariscal Sucre International Airport

The airport sits about 18km east of downtown Quito and opened at its current location in February 2013, replacing the old in-city airport. The drive downtown typically takes around 45 minutes.

Quito's altitude is real — pace the first day or two

At 2,850 meters, Quito is one of the highest capital cities in the world. Visitors arriving from lower elevations commonly feel some effects for a day or two — take it easy, stay hydrated, and go easy on alcohol at first.

The Virgin overlooking the city is a 45-meter aluminum copy of a 1734 original

The statue atop El Panecillo, completed in 1976, is a large-scale aluminum replica of Bernardo de Legarda's 1734 wooden 'Virgin of Quito' — nicknamed the 'Winged Virgin' or 'Dancing Madonna' for its silver wings and flowing pose. The original still stands inside the Church of San Francisco, a short walk from Plaza de la Independencia.

The Compañía church took four architectural styles and 160 years

Groundbreaking was in 1605; the façade alone was started in 1722, paused in 1725, and only finished in 1765 under a different architect. The finished building layers Baroque, Mudéjar, Churrigueresque and Neoclassical elements, with a central nave 58 meters long.

Ecuador's advisory is coastal, not Andean

The US State Department rates Ecuador Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) country-wide, but its specific Do Not Travel and Reconsider Travel zones — Guayaquil's southern districts, Esmeraldas province, and several coastal cantons — are all in the coastal lowlands, hundreds of kilometers from the Andean highlands where Quito sits. UK FCDO guidance names the same Coastal Region provinces specifically. Standard city precautions apply in Quito itself.

The equator monument isn't quite on the equator

The Mitad del Mundo monument was built in the 1980s on coordinates from the 18th-century French Geodesic Mission. Later GPS measurements found the true equator lies a few hundred meters away — a detail the nearby, separately-run Museo Intiñan makes the center of its own exhibit.

Good to know

  • High altitude (2,850m) can cause mild altitude sickness for a day or two; some coastal provinces carry travel advisories, though they're far from Quito itself.
