South Africa's administrative capital is best known for its jacaranda-lined streets, spectacular in the October bloom, and for landmarks spanning the country's history, from the Voortrekker Monument to the Union Buildings. It's a calmer, greener counterpoint to nearby Johannesburg.

The Union Buildings, built 1910-1913 by Sir Herbert Baker as the administrative seat of the newly formed Union of South Africa, hosted Nelson Mandela's presidential inauguration on 10 May 1994, marking the end of apartheid — a 9-metre bronze statue of him was unveiled there in 2013.
The Voortrekker Monument, built 1937-1949, blends European monumental architecture with African elements and contains a 27-panel marble frieze depicting the Great Trek of 1835-1854, said to be the largest of its kind anywhere.
Pretoria is famously lined with jacaranda trees, and the city is sometimes nicknamed the "Jacaranda City" for the purple bloom that covers its streets each spring — one of the more visually distinctive seasonal sights among South African cities.
The seat of government and a monument to earlier Afrikaner history.
Church Square, the city hall, and a Boer War-era house museum.
Botanical gardens and two urban nature reserves.
A major rugby stadium and one of South Africa's best-known schools.
Downtown historic Pretoria, then the Union Buildings and Voortrekker Monument.

Pretoria shares its main airport with Johannesburg, OR Tambo International, roughly 50km south of the city. A car or the Gautrain (with a connecting bus) both cover the route, typically 45-60 minutes depending on traffic.
OR Tambo International Airport — WikipediaOver 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 to protest the extension of pass laws to women under apartheid. The date is now commemorated annually as South Africa's National Women's Day.
Union Buildings — WikipediaAt noon on 16 December each year, a beam of sunlight through the monument's dome oculus falls precisely on the words "Ons vir Jou, Suid-Afrika" ("We for you, South Africa") on the cenotaph below — a deliberate piece of architectural design from its 1937-1949 construction.
Voortrekker Monument — WikipediaThe US State Department rates South Africa Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), citing crime, terrorism, civil unrest and kidnapping, and specifically notes that violent crime including robbery and carjacking is more common in downtown areas of major cities. Standard precautions apply in Pretoria: stick to well-populated areas, avoid displaying valuables, and take particular care with car security and after dark.
South Africa travel advice — GOV.UK (travel.state.gov blocks automated access; same Level 2/crime guidance is echoed here)The Treaty of Vereeniging, ending the Second Boer War, was signed at this Victorian-era mansion in 1902 — now a house museum with period interiors from the era.
Melrose House — WikipediaA fenced urban nature reserve with hiking and mountain-biking trails, home to antelope, zebra and other wildlife — a way to see South African wildlife without leaving Pretoria.
