Why travelers love it

A medieval city centre that survived the 20th century almost intact

Unlike most major European capitals, Prague's historic core was spared large-scale bombing in both world wars, leaving one of Europe's best-preserved old towns — Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture standing side by side across a UNESCO-listed centre.

The world's oldest astronomical clock still keeping time

Installed in 1410 on the Old Town Hall, the Prague Astronomical Clock is the oldest astronomical clock still operating anywhere. Its hourly 'Walk of the Apostles' show has drawn crowds to Old Town Square for over six centuries.

A revolution named for its gentleness

Wenceslas Square was the stage for the 1989 Velvet Revolution, the largely peaceful set of protests that ended over 40 years of Communist rule in then-Czechoslovakia — a piece of recent history embedded in a square now lined with shops and cafés.

Charles Bridge carries 30 Baroque statues across the Vltava

Completed under Charles IV in the 14th century, Charles Bridge connects the Old Town to Malá Strana and carries 30 Baroque statues added mostly in the late 17th and early 18th centuries — one of the most photographed river crossings in Europe.

Czechia carries a routine Level 1 safety rating

The US State Department rates Czechia Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions, its lowest advisory tier, with no specific warnings for Prague. The UK FCDO's guidance is similarly routine, with no areas of the country flagged for elevated risk.

The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Prague's historic centre was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992, recognising its exceptionally well-preserved medieval to Baroque townscape spanning Hradčany, Malá Strana, Staré Město and Nové Město.

Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle complex in the world

According to Guinness World Records, Prague Castle covers an area of roughly 70,000 square metres, making it the largest coherent ancient castle complex anywhere — large enough that a single visit typically takes half a day.

Public transport runs on an honesty-ticket system

Prague's metro, trams and buses share a unified ticketing system with no barriers at metro entrances — tickets must be validated on boarding and are checked by plainclothes inspectors, with on-the-spot fines for riding without a valid ticket.

Good to know

  • The Old Town and Charles Bridge become heavily crowded.
  • Some central restaurants are aimed mainly at tourists.
  • Cobblestones and steep castle approaches can be tiring.
