City guide

Perth

Perth is one of the world's most isolated major cities, set on the Swan River with easy access to Indian Ocean beaches, Rottnest Island, and the Margaret River wine region — a sunny, spread-out city that rewards a bit of a road trip mindset.

Why travelers love it

A park bigger than Central Park, and free

Kings Park's 400.6 hectares on Mount Eliza overlook the CBD and Swan River, combining a 2,000-species native Botanic Garden with two-thirds untouched bushland — Western Australia's most-visited attraction, at over 5 million visits a year, with no entry fee.

World-class beaches a train ride from downtown

Cottesloe (named the world's second-best family beach by Lonely Planet) and Scarborough are both easily reached from the CBD by train or bus, without needing a car — a rare combination of a major city with genuinely good, close-in swimming beaches.

Fremantle's convict-era heritage, fully intact

Fremantle Prison, Western Australia's only World Heritage-listed building, operated as a working prison from the 1850s until 1991 and now runs guided day and torchlight tours through original convict-built cell blocks, a short train ride from central Perth.

Practical planning

Take the Airport Line train in from the airport

Perth Airport is about 10km east of the CBD. The underground Airport Line, opened 9 October 2022, connects directly into the Transperth rail network at Bayswater station — a faster, cheaper alternative to taxi or ride-hailing for most arrivals.

Kings Park is free — budget time, not money

At 400.6 hectares (slightly larger than New York's Central Park), Kings Park is free to enter and always open. The Western Australian Botanic Garden section alone covers 2,000 native plant species; the annual Kings Park Festival each September draws over 500,000 visitors for the wildflower season.

Book a specific Fremantle Prison tour in advance

Western Australia's only World Heritage-listed building runs several distinct tours (Convict Prison, Behind Bars, True Crime, Torchlight, Tunnels) at set times, 10am-5pm daily — pick and book the one you want ahead rather than turning up expecting a single standard tour.

Fremantle Markets only run Friday-Sunday

The Yard is open 8am-6pm and The Hall 9am-6pm, Friday through Sunday, plus Monday public holidays — closed the rest of the week, so time a Fremantle day trip accordingly.

Book the Perth Mint's gold pour ahead

Australia's oldest operating mint has been refining gold for more than 125 years and runs a live gold pour demonstration alongside tours and a display including one of the world's largest gold bars — book the pour and tour times online in advance.

Get a SmartRider for the free CBD buses

A SmartRider contactless card costs 10-20% less than paper tickets across Transperth's trains and buses. Within the CBD itself, the Central Area Transit (CAT) bus network is completely free, funded by a levy on non-residential parking rather than fares.

Good to know

  • Perth's isolation means long flights from most international origins.
  • The city is spread out, and many highlights (Rottnest Island, Margaret River, Swan Valley) require a day trip.
  • Summer heat can be intense, especially inland.
