Why travelers love it

A compact Altstadt built around one square

Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche, the Neues Rathaus and the Viktualienmarkt all sit within a few minutes' walk of each other, making Munich's historic core easy to see without long transfers between sights.

Genuine beer-hall culture alongside major museums

The 1589 Hofbräuhaus sits a short walk from the Residenz palace and the Deutsches Museum, letting a single trip mix traditional Bavarian beer-hall culture with world-class science and art collections.

Big parks and easy day trips from the center

The Englischer Garten is one of the largest urban parks in the world, right by the center, and Nymphenburg Palace, Olympiapark and Alpine lakes are all a short S-Bahn or tram ride away.

Practical planning

Take the S1 or S8 S-Bahn from the airport

Munich Airport is served directly by S-Bahn lines S1 and S8, both running into the city center in roughly 40–45 minutes — check current timetables and fares (MVV) before you travel.

Munich Airport, transport and directions

Buy an MVV ticket that covers your whole trip

Munich's U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses are all covered by the same MVV ticketing system; single, day and multi-day tickets are available and cover the airport-to-center S-Bahn as well as inner-city transit.

MVV, ticket and price overview

Time Marienplatz for the Glockenspiel

The Neues Rathaus carillon plays daily at 11 a.m. and noon, plus an extra 5 p.m. show March through October, and is free to watch from the square.

muenchen.de, New Town Hall

The Frauenkirche is free; the tower is not

Entry to the cathedral nave is free, daily 8:00–20:00. Climbing the South Tower is a separate paid ticket with shorter hours (Mon–Sat 10:00–17:00, Sun/holidays 11:30–17:00, last entry 16:30).

Visit the Viktualienmarkt on a weekday for full stalls

Most Viktualienmarkt food stalls trade Monday to Saturday and close on Sundays, though some bakeries, florists and food stands stay open — plan a weekday or Saturday visit for the full market experience.

Viktualienmarkt, opening hours

No reservation needed at the Hofbräuhaus for small groups

The Hofbräuhaus's ground-floor Schwemme is first-come, first-served for individuals and small groups — reservations are only required for parties of four or more.

Good to know

  • Accommodation prices rise sharply during major events.
  • Many shops close on Sundays.
  • The city can feel quiet compared with larger nightlife destinations.
