City guide
Manaus sits in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, reachable only by air or river, and serves as the main gateway for jungle lodges and river tours — a genuinely unusual major city defined almost entirely by its rainforest setting.

Teatro Amazonas, built 1884-1896 with materials shipped from Europe (Alsace roofing tiles, Glasgow steel, Carrara marble), was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2026 as part of the 'Theaters of the Amazon' listing — a fresh recognition of a landmark that's still an active opera and concert venue.
Bosque da Ciência and the Museu da Amazônia (MUSA) both put real rainforest — sloths, manatees, giant otters, forest canopy trails — inside Manaus itself, a useful primer or standalone visit alongside any lodge-based jungle trip.
Just outside the city, the dark Rio Negro and the pale, sediment-carrying Rio Solimões run side by side for kilometers without mixing, due to differences in temperature, speed and density — a striking, easily reached natural phenomenon usually seen by boat tour.

The airport sits about 14km north of downtown Manaus, roughly a 20-30 minute taxi or ride-hailing trip. It's Brazil's main gateway to the Amazon, with domestic connections via Azul, Gol and LATAM plus limited international routes (Panama City, Lisbon).
Eduardo Gomes International Airport — WikipediaUNESCO inscribed Teatro Amazonas on July 27, 2026, jointly with Belém's Theatro da Paz, under the collective title 'Theaters of the Amazon' — pairing the opera house with the Praça São Sebastião square that frames it. Check the Festival Amazonas de Ópera and concert schedule, and day tours run separately from performances.
Rio Times, UNESCO Names Amazon Theaters World Heritage SitesThe Rio Negro flows at around 2 km/h at 28°C, while the Rio Solimões flows 4-6 km/h at 22°C — the temperature and speed difference keeps the two rivers' distinct colors visibly separate for several kilometers before they fully mix roughly 60km downstream. Seen by boat tour from Manaus.
Meeting of Waters — WikipediaThis INPA-run science park (forest trails, manatees, giant otters, free-roaming sloths) is open Tue-Fri 9am-12pm and 2-5pm, weekends/holidays 9am-5pm. Admission is currently free, but visits must be scheduled online in advance — walk-ins are not guaranteed entry.
Bosque da Ciência, official visiting-hours pageBuilt in 1903 as a private mansion for a German rubber merchant, the palace was bought by the state government in 1917 and served as the governor's seat until 1995, when it became the Centro Cultural Palácio Rio Negro — now hosting exhibitions, recitals and a small museum in the historic Centro district.
Visite Manaus, Palácio Rio NegroThe UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to certain remote river stretches in Amazonas state — sections of the Amazon/Solimões river west of Codajás, and parts of the Itaquaí, Japurá and Rio Negro river systems well upstream and west/north of Manaus. These are well beyond the areas covered by standard Manaus-based jungle lodge tours and the Meeting of Waters; check current official guidance before planning any independent travel deep into the river interior.
