Lima is South America's culinary capital, home to some of the world's best-ranked restaurants, a dramatic clifftop coastline, and a well-preserved colonial-era historic center recognized by UNESCO.

Lima routinely places multiple restaurants in the World's 50 Best list, built on Peru's fusion of indigenous Andean, Spanish, Chinese (chifa) and Japanese (nikkei) traditions — ceviche, causa and anticuchos are as central to a Lima visit as any monument.
Huaca Pucllana, a 200-700 AD adobe pyramid built by the Lima Culture, sits directly within the upscale Miraflores district — a rare case of a major archaeological site surrounded by apartment buildings and restaurants rather than fenced off in isolation.
Lima's Centro Histórico, centered on the 1535 Plaza Mayor, retains its colonial-era cathedral, government palace and monastery — including the Convento de San Francisco's catacombs, believed to hold the remains of around 25,000 people from Lima's earlier centuries as a Spanish colonial capital.

Jorge Chávez International Airport sits in Callao, northwest of central Lima. Taxi and ride-hailing apps are the standard way into Miraflores or the Centro Histórico, typically 45-60 minutes depending on traffic — arrange transport through the airport's official counters or a ride-hailing app rather than unlicensed taxi touts.
Jorge Chávez International Airport — WikipediaBuilt 200-700 AD by the Lima Culture (with later Wari-era additions, 500-1000 AD), the pyramid's seven staggered adobe-and-clay platforms run over 500 meters long and up to 22 meters high. Guided tours (included with entry) explain the ceremonial offering pits and burial finds.
Huaca Pucllana — WikipediaFounded in 1926 in an 18th-century vice-royal building, the museum holds one of the world's largest pre-Columbian collections, spanning roughly 5,000 years of Peruvian history. It's particularly well known for a dedicated gallery of pre-Columbian erotic pottery, the subject of founder Rafael Larco Hoyle's 1966 book 'Checan'.
Larco Museum — WikipediaThe Convento de San Francisco's underground catacombs served as Lima's main cemetery until the early 19th century, and are estimated to hold the remains of around 25,000 people. Entry is by guided tour, which also covers the monastery's historic library and Baroque architecture.
Basilica and Convent of San Francisco, Lima — WikipediaThe clifftop Malecón path runs along the Miraflores coastline, connecting Parque del Amor and several other parks with sea views — walkable end to end, and the easiest way to string together an afternoon of Miraflores sights without a taxi.
Malecón de Miraflores — WikipediaPeru's US State Department advisory rates the country Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), citing crime and civil unrest as general risks, with specific do-not-travel areas limited to the Colombia-Peru border region (Loreto) and the VRAEM valley — both far from Lima and not part of any standard visit. Within Lima itself, the usual big-city precautions apply: stick to well-touristed areas like Miraflores and Barranco after dark, use official taxis or ride-hailing rather than street hails, and keep valuables out of sight.
