City guide
Northern Nigeria's ancient trading hub is one of West Africa's oldest continuously inhabited cities, its walled Old City home to the centuries-old Kurmi Market, the Emir's Palace, and a distinct Hausa-Islamic architectural heritage found nowhere else in the country.

Kano was founded in 999 CE and grew into the southernmost hub of the trans-Saharan trade routes; by the 1850s the city was producing millions of tanned hides and sandals a year. Its Old City walls, begun in the 12th century, still ring the historic core.
The Kofar Mata dye pits have hand-dyed cloth with fermented natural indigo for more than 500 years, and the trade is still passed down through families today — a rare working link to Kano's Trans-Saharan trading past rather than a museum reconstruction of it.
Gidan Rumfa, the Emir's Palace, has been the seat of Kano's traditional ruler continuously since the late 15th century, and the nearby Great Mosque of Kano — Nigeria's oldest — still holds Friday prayers beneath its seven domes.

As of this writing, the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Kano State, and the US State Department's Nigeria advisory (Level 3: Reconsider Travel overall) separately lists Kano among the states it advises not traveling to, citing unrest, crime and kidnapping risk. This is a real, specifically-named regional advisory rather than a general country-level caution — check both government sources for the latest guidance, and if you do travel, arrange local guidance and avoid moving around after dark.
UK FCDO, Nigeria travel adviceMallam Aminu Kano International Airport sits about 8km from the city center, roughly 15-20 minutes by taxi. Domestic flights connect Kano to Lagos and Abuja; there are also limited regional international routes.
Kano — WikipediaGidan Rumfa was built in the late 15th century by Muhammad Rumfa and spans some 33 acres behind 4.6-meter walls. It remains the working residence of the Emir of Kano today — over 1,000 people live within the compound — so it's viewed from outside as a functioning royal household, not a historic ruin.
Gidan Rumfa — WikipediaArtisans here use techniques over 500 years old, dipping cloth repeatedly into fermented indigo vats and letting it oxidize in the air to a deep blue. The knowledge passes through family lineages; the pits face real pressure from urban development and waning younger-generation interest, so visiting also supports a living craft.
Kofar Mata Dye Pits — WikipediaFounded in the 15th century by Muhammad Rumfa and rebuilt in 1909 after the original was razed, Kurmi Market grew out of Kano's trans-Saharan trade role and once traded everything from textiles and leather to livestock. It's still active today, largely serving local shoppers, in the Jakara district near the Old City core.
Kurmi Market — WikipediaBuilt for Muhammad Rumfa in the 15th century, relocated in 1582 and rebuilt several times since (most recently with British assistance after a 1950s demolition), the mosque has seven domes and two 20-meter minarets. It remains an active place of worship — ask locally about respectful visiting, particularly around prayer times.
