Afghanistan's capital sits in a mountain-ringed valley with a history stretching back millennia along the Silk Road, home to landmarks like the Bagh-e Babur gardens and the National Museum of Afghanistan. Current political and security conditions mean travel to Kabul requires very close attention to government advisories, and independent tourism is extremely limited.

Bagh-e Babur, an 11.5-hectare terraced garden containing the tomb of Babur, founder of the Mughal Empire, dates to around 1504. Heavily damaged during the 1992-1996 civil war, it was restored in 2002-2004 by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and is now managed by the independent Bagh-e Babur Trust — a documented case study in post-conflict heritage restoration, presented here for its historical and architectural significance.
Darul Aman Palace, a 150-room neoclassical building completed in 1927 for King Amanullah Khan, was gutted by fire in 1968, set ablaze during the 1978 coup, hit by tank fire in a 1990 coup attempt, and left a shell by shelling during the 1990s civil war. A 2016-2019 restoration reopened it as a public heritage site for Afghanistan's independence centenary — its layered history spans a century of the country's turbulent 20th century.
Bala Hissar, overlooking the city, has been fortified since at least the 5th century and was rebuilt repeatedly through the Mughal era. It was a major site of fighting in both the First and Second Anglo-Afghan Wars — one of the longest continuously significant defensive sites in the region's history.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises against all travel to the whole of Afghanistan, citing a volatile security situation and the risk of violent clashes, including in border regions. This guidance covers Kabul as part of the whole country, not a specific district within it.
Afghanistan travel advice — GOV.UKThe US State Department's advisory states plainly: do not travel to Afghanistan for any reason, and urges American citizens already there to leave immediately, citing civil unrest, crime, terrorism, risk of wrongful detention, kidnapping, natural disasters, and limited health facilities.
Afghanistan Travel Advisory — US Department of State (cited via GOV.UK, since travel.state.gov blocks automated access)Kabul's international airport sits roughly 16km from the city center. Given the current travel advisories above, this information is provided for historical and reference context rather than as travel planning guidance.
Hamid Karzai International Airport — WikipediaThe museum's collection was heavily looted and vandalized during the 1990s civil war and again in 2001 under Taliban rule. Its historic motto — "a nation stays alive when its culture stays alive" — reflects the institution's ongoing, partial rebuilding with recovered and repatriated artifacts.
National Museum of Afghanistan — WikipediaOver 80 engineers and architects worked on returning the palace's marble staircases, Corinthian columns and domed towers to their original condition after decades of war damage, reopening the site in 2019 to mark Afghanistan's independence centenary.
Darul Aman Palace — WikipediaHistorically the country's leading center of higher education, it remains the largest university in Afghanistan — noted here for its historical significance to the city.
