City guide

Gaziantep

Gaziantep is Turkey's culinary capital and a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, known for baklava, a rich mosaic collection at the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, and a historic bazaar district — a food-focused destination rather than a classic sightseeing stop.

Why travelers love it

One of the world's largest mosaic collections

The Zeugma Mosaic Museum, opened in September 2011, displays roughly 1,700 square meters of Roman-era mosaics rescued from the ancient city of Zeugma before flooding by the Birecik Dam — including the famous "Gypsy Girl" — a genuinely world-class collection under one roof.

500 years of coppersmithing, still working

Bakırcılar Çarşısı, the Coppersmiths' Bazaar, has hosted hand-hammered copperware production for more than five centuries; workshops here are still active, not staged for tourists, alongside stalls selling the finished trays and pots.

Turkey's first UNESCO City of Gastronomy

Named in 2015, Gaziantep earned the title on the strength of a food culture that produced Turkey's first product with EU protected designation of origin (baklava, 2013) and supplies around 80% of the country's pistachio exports.

Practical planning

Gaziantep Castle's interior access has been repeatedly delayed since 2023

The 2023 earthquake severely damaged the fortress; restoration of its bastions and rampart walls was completed in October 2025 after two and a half years of work, but interior/museum reopening to visitors was still pending in mid-2026 reporting — the exterior, ramparts and surrounding park remain viewable, so confirm current interior access locally.

The Zeugma Mosaic Museum is worth a dedicated couple of hours

With roughly 1,700 square meters of Roman-era mosaics on display, including the famous Gypsy Girl mosaic, this is one of the largest mosaic collections in the world under one roof — check opening hours locally before visiting, as sources give varying times.

Official source

Visit the Coppersmiths' Bazaar on a weekday morning

Bakırcılar Çarşısı's copper workshops are most active hammering and shaping pieces earlier in the week and earlier in the day — a weekend or late-afternoon visit is more likely to catch stalls quiet or closing.

Kurtuluş Mosque was originally an Armenian cathedral

Built as the Armenian Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God, the building became a mosque after the French occupation of Gaziantep ended in 1921, and was renamed Kurtuluş ("Liberation") to mark the event — a working mosque today, so dress modestly and avoid prayer times.

Official source

Baklava here carries EU protected-origin status

Gaziantep baklava became the first Turkish product to receive a European protected designation of origin, in 2013 — a useful marker for seeking out the genuine regional version rather than a generic import when shopping in the Bey District's baklava shops.

Good to know

  • The city sits close to the Turkey–Syria border region, so it's worth checking current travel advisories before visiting.
  • Summer heat is intense.
  • Fewer visitors come specifically for sightseeing versus food, so some attractions can feel less set up for international tourists than in bigger Turkish cities.
