Why travelers love it

An unfinished Mughal fort with a real ghost story

Lalbagh Fort was begun in 1678 by a Mughal prince and never completed — work stopped after Subahdar Shaista Khan's daughter, Pari Bibi, died there in 1684 and he came to see the site as ill-omened. Her tomb, a governor's residence and a three-domed mosque still stand around a large water tank.

A Nawab's pink palace on the Buriganga

Ahsan Manzil, built 1859-1872 for the Nawab of Dhaka, is famous for its lotus-bud dome and Indo-Saracenic facade — and for hosting the 1906 founding meeting of the All India Muslim League. It's now a museum on the historic river that once carried Dhaka's trade.

One of the 20th century's great works of architecture

Louis Kahn's National Parliament House, built 1964-1982 with construction paused through the 1971 Liberation War, won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1989 and is still called one of modernism's defining buildings — a striking contrast to Old Dhaka's Mughal monuments across the city.

Practical planning

Bangladesh's current travel advisory, briefly

As of this writing, the US State Department rates Bangladesh Level 3: Reconsider Travel, citing crime, unrest and terrorism risk, with occasional protests still possible though violence has decreased since 2024. The UK FCDO's specific no-go advice is limited to the Chittagong Hill Tracts region, well outside Dhaka. In the capital itself, the standard precaution is straightforward: avoid political gatherings and protests, which can turn unpredictable, and check current guidance before you travel.

Arriving at Hazrat Shahjalal and getting into the city

Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is about 15km from the city center; travel time varies enormously with Dhaka traffic, from 30 minutes off-peak to 90 minutes or more at busy times. The Dhaka Metro's newer lines and ride-hailing apps both help avoid the worst congestion once you're in the city.

Lalbagh Fort's unfinished history

Construction began in 1678 under Prince Muhammad Azam Shah and was carried on, then abandoned, by Subahdar Shaista Khan after his daughter Pari Bibi's death in 1684. The grounds include her tomb, the Diwan-i-Aam residence and hammam, and a mosque around a large square water tank — allow time to see the whole site, not just the tomb.

Ahsan Manzil is run as a museum, with set hours

Built 1859-1872 for Nawab Khwaja Abdul Ghani and operated as a museum since 1992 under the Bangladesh National Museum, Ahsan Manzil typically closes one day a week — check current opening days and hours before visiting, as museum schedules in Dhaka can change.

Star Mosque's mosaic is made from broken porcelain

The mosque's signature star motifs, added in a 1926 renovation, are chinitikri work — mosaic pieced together from broken Chinese and Japanese porcelain. It's a working mosque in Armanitola, Old Dhaka, so dress modestly and time a visit outside prayer hours if you're mainly there for the tilework.

Visiting the National Parliament House

The chamber itself is restricted to members and staff, but Louis Kahn's landscaped grounds and artificial lake are open to the public, and foreign visitors can arrange a paid interior tour. The building is a significant detour from Old Dhaka's historic core, so plan it as a separate outing.

Good to know

  • Severe traffic congestion; air quality can be poor, especially in the dry winter months.
