City guide

Chicago

Chicago combines a genuinely dramatic skyline along Lake Michigan with world-class museums, deep-dish and other iconic food, and neighborhoods that each feel like their own small city — a major American destination that's often underrated compared with New York or Los Angeles.

Why travelers love it

A skyline that made architectural history

Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) was the world's tallest building for nearly 25 years after opening in 1973, and its 103rd-floor Skydeck — the highest observation deck in the US — includes glass 'Ledge' balconies that extend out over the street.

World-class museums, side by side

The Art Institute of Chicago holds major Impressionist and American works including Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte and Grant Wood's American Gothic, while the Field Museum on the lakefront Museum Campus is home to SUE, the largest and most complete T. rex skeleton ever found.

A free, walkable lakefront core

Millennium Park and its Cloud Gate sculpture ('The Bean'), Navy Pier's promenade, and Lincoln Park Zoo are all free to enter, clustered along or near Lake Michigan and easy to combine on foot or by a short L ride.

Practical planning

O'Hare to downtown by CTA Blue Line

The CTA Blue Line runs directly to a terminal at O'Hare International Airport, giving a straightforward rail connection into the Loop without relying on road traffic.

Official source

Midway to downtown by CTA Orange Line

The Orange Line runs from the Loop to Midway International Airport, beginning at a station on the east side of the airport — the equivalent of the Blue Line for travelers flying into Midway instead of O'Hare.

Official source

Millennium Park and Cloud Gate are free

Millennium Park, including the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Lurie Garden and the Cloud Gate sculpture ('The Bean'), is free and open to the public year-round in the heart of the Loop.

Art Institute of Chicago collections

One of the largest and most respected art museums in the US, with major holdings spanning Impressionism, American art and beyond; plan to focus on a few galleries rather than the whole museum in one visit.

Willis Tower Skydeck tickets

The Skydeck sits on the 103rd floor, 1,353 feet above ground, with 'The Ledge' glass balconies extending 4.3 feet out from the building; the official site sells timed-entry tickets to manage crowds, so booking ahead is worthwhile.

Official source

Field Museum hours and SUE the T. rex

The Field Museum is open daily 9am–5pm (last entry 4pm) at 1400 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive, on the lakefront Museum Campus; SUE the T. rex is a signature exhibit alongside its natural history and anthropology collections.

Official source

Lincoln Park Zoo is free, no reservations needed

Lincoln Park Zoo offers free admission with no reservations required, open 365 days a year (8am–5pm weekdays, 8am–7pm weekends/holidays), on the North Side within Lincoln Park.

Navy Pier is free to walk

Navy Pier itself is free to enter and walk, with individual attractions like the Centennial Wheel, boat tours and Flyover Chicago ticketed separately; the pier also hosts more than 245 free public programs each year.

Good to know

  • Winters are cold and windy, living up to the city's nickname.
  • The city is large, and top sights are spread across multiple neighborhoods.
  • Summer is the most popular (and priciest/most crowded) time to visit.
