Why travelers love it

Living Dravidian temple architecture

The Kapaleeshwarar Temple's towering 7th-century gopuram anchors Mylapore, still an active place of daily worship rather than a roped-off monument.

A long, storied Bay of Bengal shoreline

Marina Beach's roughly 13km promenade is one of the world's longest urban beaches, lined with statues of Tamil literary and political figures and a genuine local evening gathering spot.

Layers of colonial and apostolic history

From Fort St. George — the first English fortress in India, still holding India's first national flag — to San Thome Basilica, one of the very few churches in the world built over an apostle's tomb, Chennai's history runs centuries deep.

Practical planning

Airport to city by Metro

The Chennai Metro's Blue Line has connected the airport to Little Mount and onward into the city center since 21 September 2016, giving a direct rail option away from road traffic. As of December 2025 the network spans 54.1km across two lines and 41 stations.

Marina Beach safety

Swimming and bathing are prohibited at Marina Beach — the water has strong undercurrents, and drownings are a recurring problem (roughly five a month by some estimates). Enjoy the promenade, statues and street food, but stay out of the water.

Official source

Fort St. George and the Fort Museum

Completed in 1644 as the first English fortress in India, Fort St. George now houses Tamil Nadu's state legislature alongside the Fort Museum (opened 1795), which displays colonial-era weapons, coins and personal letters — and preserves India's first national flag on its third floor (no photography allowed there).

Kapaleeshwarar Temple visiting notes

Dating to around the 7th century under the Pallavas, the temple's Dravidian gopuram rises roughly 120 feet. It is an active Hindu temple with six daily rituals between 5:30am and 10pm — modest dress is expected, and it's worth checking current entry rules for non-Hindu visitors before going.

Official source

San Thome Basilica

Founded in 1523 by Portuguese explorers over the traditional burial site of St. Thomas the Apostle, rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style and consecrated in 1896. It's one of only a handful of churches worldwide built directly over an apostle's tomb, and was designated a National Shrine in 2004.

Official source

Government Museum, Egmore

India's second-oldest museum (founded 1851, moved to its current Egmore site in 1854), spanning six buildings and 46 galleries. Its bronze gallery holds roughly 500 bronze idols dating back as far as 1000 BCE, among the largest such collections in Asia.

Good to know

  • Summer heat and humidity are intense, especially April–June.
  • Traffic congestion can make road journeys slow and unpredictable.
  • Monsoon season (October–December) can bring heavy rain and occasional flooding.
