Caracas is Venezuela's high-altitude capital, hemmed between the Ávila mountain and its Caribbean coastline, with a historic center, a modernist university campus, and one of the world's longer-running cable cars.

Plaza Bolívar has anchored Caracas since Diego de Losada laid it out in 1567. It's still ringed by the cathedral, the Capitolio and City Hall, with the Panteón Nacional (Simón Bolívar's resting place) and his reconstructed birthplace, the Casa Natal del Libertador, both a short walk away.
The Teleférico de Caracas has climbed the Ávila (Waraira Repano) since December 1955 — closed for decades after the 1970s, rebuilt in the 2000s, and running again today over a 3.5km route to a summit with views across the city and out to the Caribbean coast.
The Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, designed by Carlos Raúl Villanueva through the 1940s-50s and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, integrates large-scale artworks by Calder, Léger and Arp into its architecture — with Villanueva's own Museo de Bellas Artes and the Teatro Teresa Carreño nearby continuing the same modernist thread.

The airport (CCS) sits in Maiquetía, about 21km west of central Caracas, connected by the Caracas-La Guaira highway — typically a 30-45 minute drive depending on traffic and conditions.
Simón Bolívar International Airport — WikipediaThe US State Department rates Venezuela Level 3 (Reconsider Travel), citing crime, kidnapping, terrorism and poor health infrastructure. The named Do Not Travel areas — the Colombia border region, Amazonas, Apure, Aragua outside Maracay, rural Bolívar, Guárico and Táchira states — are all well outside Caracas. UK FCDO guidance similarly names border areas and the Orinoco Mining Arc in Bolívar state, not the capital itself. Standard big-city precautions still apply in Caracas: stick to well-touristed areas, avoid displaying valuables, and check current guidance before finalizing plans.
Venezuela Travel Advice — GOV.UKInaugurated in December 1955, the Teleférico de Caracas ran for two decades before closing; reopening attempts in 1986, 1988 and 1990 all failed. Reconstruction began in 2000 under a private concession, which was revoked by the government in August 2007 — the system was renamed Waraira Repano that October and has operated since, with the adjoining Hotel Humboldt restored and reopened in 2018.
Caracas cable car — WikipediaCarlos Raúl Villanueva's Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, built mainly in the 1940s-50s, was inscribed by UNESCO in 2000 as an outstanding example of modernist urban planning, architecture and integrated art.
Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas — WikipediaVenezuela's National Pantheon, housed in a former church, holds the remains of Simón Bolívar and other notable historical figures, and remains an active site of state ceremony.
National Pantheon of Venezuela — WikipediaOpened on 27 March 1983, the Caracas Metro now spans multiple lines and around 47 stations, carrying roughly 2 million passenger trips and remaining the most practical way to cross the city.
