Why travelers love it

One of the world's most dramatic urban settings

Table Mountain rises directly above downtown, with the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meeting at the peninsula's tip nearby.

A living record of South Africa's history

Robben Island, District Six Museum, Bo-Kaap and the Castle of Good Hope trace the story from Dutch colonization through apartheid to democracy.

Beaches, wine and nature within a short drive

Camps Bay and Clifton's beaches, Constantia's vineyards, and Kirstenbosch's botanical gardens all sit within the city limits.

Practical planning

Book the Table Mountain cableway in advance

The Aerial Cableway runs seasonal hours (roughly 8am–8pm in summer, 8:30am–6pm in winter); the last car up leaves about an hour before closing. It closes in high wind or low cloud, so build a flexible day around it and book tickets online ahead of peak periods.

Robben Island tours must be booked ahead

Ferries to Robben Island depart from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront, with daily departures around 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm; the full tour including the ferry both ways runs about 3.5 hours. Book online in advance.

Official source

Kirstenbosch tickets are online-only

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden no longer accepts cash — tickets must be bought online in advance. The garden is open daily, roughly 8am–7pm in summer (September–March) and 8am–6pm in winter (April–August).

Official source

Check Cape Point's funicular status before you go

Cape Point Nature Reserve has seasonal gate hours (roughly 6am–6pm October–March, 7am–5pm April–September). The Flying Dutchman Funicular to the lighthouse has had scheduled maintenance closures with a shuttle running instead, so check current status before planning around it.

Official source

Castle of Good Hope opening hours

The Castle is open daily 9am–4pm (last tickets 3:45pm), closed only on Christmas Day and Workers' Day. Adult admission is R50.

Verify the MyCiTi airport bus is running before relying on it

The MyCiTi A01 route normally connects the airport to the Civic Centre every 20 minutes, but as of this review the official MyCiTi site listed the airport service as temporarily suspended — check current status before your trip and have a metered taxi or ride-hailing app as a fallback.

Good to know

  • Standard urban-safety awareness is worth keeping in mind, particularly around certain neighborhoods and after dark — a rental car or reputable transport service is often recommended over walking at night.
  • Table Mountain's cable car closes in high wind, so build flexibility into a visit.
  • The Cape's summer (December–February) is peak season with higher prices and crowds; some areas have experienced water restrictions in dry years.
