Why travelers love it

The last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World

The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx sit on the edge of the city, a short taxi ride from downtown.

One of the world's richest collections of Egyptian antiquities

The century-old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square anchors the collection, much of it now shared with the newer Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza.

A living historic Islamic old town

Al-Azhar Mosque, the Cairo Citadel and the centuries-old Khan el-Khalili bazaar all sit within walking distance of each other.

The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square is open daily 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (Ramadan hours 9:00 AM–4:00 PM, with the ticket window closing an hour before close). Cairo Metro fares

As of the fare update on 27 March 2026, Cairo Metro tickets are priced by distance: LE10 for up to 9 stops, LE12 for up to 16 stops, LE15 for up to 23 stops, and LE20 beyond that. The middle two cars of every train have been reserved for women since 1989 (marked with pink/blue signage), though the 5th car becomes mixed-use after 9:00 PM.

Khan el-Khalili: what to expect

The bazaar's shops mainly sell souvenirs, antiques, jewelry and perfume, alongside an adjoining goldsmiths' souq still used by locals. Several historic coffeehouses operate inside the market, including El-Fishawy Café, established in 1773. Haggling is the norm — merchants expect it, so don't accept the first price offered.

Use ride-hailing apps over street taxis

Careem, inDrive and Uber are widely recommended over hailing a regular street taxi in Cairo, both for pricing transparency and reliability. This is a practical, low-friction way to reach spread-out sights like Giza and the Citadel.

Check current admission prices before visiting

Ticket prices for the Giza Pyramids plateau, the Cairo Citadel and other state-run sites are revised periodically by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. Check the official portal for current prices and any advance-booking requirements before your trip rather than relying on older published figures.

Good to know

  • Traffic congestion is severe and can make journeys unpredictable.
  • Summer heat is intense, especially away from the Nile.
  • As with many major tourist sites worldwide, persistent touts and unofficial guides around the pyramids and bazaars are common — using a reputable guide or tour operator helps.
