The Republic of the Congo's capital faces Kinshasa across the Congo River's Malebo Pool, giving it one of the most striking urban river settings in Africa. Brazzaville pairs riverside promenades and the Basilica of Sainte-Anne with a compact, walkable center, and it's generally calmer than its larger neighbor across the water.

Brazzaville and Kinshasa face each other across the Congo River — the only place on earth where two national capitals developed on opposite riverbanks in sight of one another. A flight between them takes just five minutes, though Kinshasa is more than five times larger in population.
Basilique Sainte-Anne, built in the 1940s to a design by French colonial architect Roger Erell, is instantly recognizable by its distinctive green ceramic-tile roof — one of the most photographed buildings in Central Africa.
La Case de Gaulle, on the Bacongo riverfront, is where Charles de Gaulle stayed and delivered the 1940 Brazzaville speech that launched the Free French resistance movement — Brazzaville briefly served as the capital of Free France during WWII, a role few travelers associate with a Central African city.

Maya-Maya Airport sits about 4km from central Brazzaville, roughly a 10-15 minute taxi ride — notably closer than most capital-city airports in the region.
Brazzaville — WikipediaThe Congo River separates Brazzaville from Kinshasa, capital of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo — the only place in the world where two national capitals sit on opposite riverbanks within sight of each other. A twice-weekly flight between them takes only five minutes.
Brazzaville — WikipediaBuilt in the 1940s under French colonial architect Roger Erell, the basilica's green ceramic-tile roof was a deliberate departure from typical European church design of the period, making it one of Central Africa's most distinctive religious buildings.
WikipediaThe US State Department rates the Republic of the Congo Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), citing crime such as armed robbery and assault as an ongoing but not common concern. The UK FCDO's only "avoid all travel" zone is within 50km of the Central African Republic border in the Likouala region, in the country's far north, well away from Brazzaville. Standard big-city precautions apply in the capital: stay alert in crowded markets and avoid displaying valuables after dark.
Congo Travel Advice — GOV.UK / FCDOAfter France's fall to Germany in 1940, Charles de Gaulle stayed at what is now called La Case de Gaulle and delivered a radio address establishing Brazzaville as a rallying point for the Free French resistance — for a period, Brazzaville functioned as the informal capital of Free France.
Brazzaville — WikipediaThe Poto-Poto district gave its name to the École de Peinture de Poto-Poto, a naive-art painting movement founded in the 1950s that became one of Central Africa's most recognized artistic traditions — small galleries and workshops in the neighborhood still sell work in the style today.
