City guide

Bhopal

Bhopal, known as the "City of Lakes," blends Mughal-era mosques and palaces with a genuinely lake-centered city layout, and serves as a practical gateway to the UNESCO-listed Buddhist stupas at Sanchi and the rock shelters of Bhimbetka.

Why travelers love it

India's largest mosque

Taj-ul-Masajid holds around 26,000 worshippers, making it the largest mosque in India. Construction began in the 1870s under Nawab Shah Jahan Begum, one of Bhopal's line of female rulers, and wasn't completed until 1958.

A genuinely lake-centered city

The Upper and Lower Lakes together form the Bhoj Wetland, a Ramsar-listed wetland that supplies around 40% of Bhopal's drinking water — boating, lakeside walks and sunset views are part of daily life here, not just a tourist add-on.

The practical base for Sanchi and Bhimbetka

Two separate UNESCO World Heritage Sites sit within an hour of Bhopal: the 3rd-century-BCE Buddhist Great Stupa complex at Sanchi (46km northeast, inscribed 1989) and the prehistoric rock art at Bhimbetka, with paintings dated to 10,000 BCE across 750+ shelters (45km southeast, inscribed 2003).

Practical planning

Getting in from Raja Bhoj Airport

Raja Bhoj Airport sits about 15km from Bhopal Junction railway station, roughly 20-30 minutes by taxi or ride-hailing. IndiGo runs the widest network (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and more); Air India and Air India Express also connect Delhi and Mumbai.

Taj-ul-Masajid's long construction history

Building began in the 1870s under Nawab Shah Jahan Begum, stalled after her death in 1901, and was only finished in 1958 by her successors at a cost of 20 million rupees — the pink facade and twin 18-story minarets took nearly a century from start to finish. Dress modestly and avoid visiting during prayer times unless attending.

Upper Lake boating and the Ramsar wetland

Bhojtal (Upper Lake) covers 31 sq km and, together with the Lower Lake, forms the Ramsar-listed Bhoj Wetland. The Boat Club offers kayaking, sailing, motor boat and other water-sport trips on the lake.

Van Vihar is closed on Fridays

This 4.45 sq km zoo/national-park hybrid on the Upper Lake's edge is unusual in that visitors travel through it by road rather than open safari — bicycles can be rented at the gates. Closed Fridays; plan around it.

Sanchi day trip: plan for the Great Stupa

The Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi, 46km northeast of Bhopal, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989. The Great Stupa, commissioned by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE to house Buddha's relics, is considered the best-preserved group of Buddhist monuments in India — a car or organized tour is the practical way to reach it from Bhopal.

Bhimbetka day trip: some of India's oldest art

The Bhimbetka rock shelters, 45km southeast of Bhopal, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. The site holds over 750 rock shelters, with roughly 400 containing paintings — the earliest dated to around 10,000 BCE — spanning from the Paleolithic through medieval periods.

Good to know

  • Summer heat (April–June) is intense.
  • Some of the city's best day trips (Sanchi, Bhimbetka) require a car or organized tour to reach comfortably.
  • Air quality can be poor in winter months, common across much of North/Central India.
