City guide
Bern's UNESCO-listed medieval Old City sits on a narrow peninsula looped by the Aare river, its sandstone arcades and clock tower barely changed since the 15th century.

Inscribed in 1983, Bern's sandstone Old City was rebuilt entirely in stone after a 1405 fire, giving it nearly 6km of covered arcades (Lauben) and a coherent medieval street plan that still functions as the city's everyday shopping and living quarter, not a museum piece.
The Bundeshaus, seat of the Swiss federal government, sits at the edge of the Old City on Bundesplatz — a rare case of a national parliament building being a five-minute walk from a 13th-century clock tower and a rose garden.
In summer, locals float down the fast, cold Aare from the Marzili pool through the city center — a genuinely local tradition, alongside Bern's centuries-old symbol, the bears of the Bärengraben, now housed in an open-air park on the riverbank.
The medieval arcaded core, from the clock tower to the city hall.
Switzerland's federal parliament, Einstein's former apartment, and a historic city gate along the way.
The bear park, a gorge-spanning bridge, and Bern's best panoramic viewpoint over the Old City.
The university's botanical garden and the hillside rose garden, both a short walk from the center.
A loop through the medieval core, government quarter and cathedral, finishing with sunset views.
A short riverside loop to the bear park and Bern's best viewpoint.
A slower two-day version splitting the Old City from the riverside and green spaces.
Most visitors arrive by train rather than air — Bern main station has direct connections to Zurich, Basel, Lucerne and Interlaken all within an hour. By air, Bern-Belp airport (small, limited routes) is about 30 minutes from the main station; Zurich Airport, with far more international routes, is about 1h15 by direct train.
Bern Welcome, Travelling to BernThe clock tower dates to around 1218-1220, with its current astronomical clock mechanism installed in 1527-1530. A gilded figure strikes the hour, and mechanical figures perform a short show in the minutes before each full hour — worth timing a visit around.
Zytglogge — WikipediaThe historic Bärengraben pit (in use since 1857) is now linked by tunnel to the larger, open-air BärenPark on the Aare riverbank, opened in 2009 with an inclined lift added in 2015. Free to view from street level at any time.
Bärengraben — WikipediaBern Minster is Switzerland's tallest cathedral at 100.6 meters, completed in 1893. For a small fee, visitors can climb 254 steps to a lower platform and a further 90 steps to the spire — on a clear day, the view reaches as far as the Alps.
Bern Minster — WikipediaBern's Old City was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, specifically for its exceptionally coherent medieval planning and its post-1405-fire sandstone rebuilding — the arcaded streets and layout, not any single building, are what's protected.
Old City of Bern — WikipediaThe apartment where Einstein lived while developing special relativity is open daily 10am-5pm (February to mid-December), last entry 4:45pm, with tickets bookable online; some Fridays in August offer free admission as part of a community initiative.
