City guide
Ahmedabad, Gujarat's largest city, is India's first UNESCO World Heritage City, with a walkable old-city core of intricately carved stepwells, mosques and havelis, alongside Sabarmati Ashram, the historic base of Mahatma Gandhi's independence movement.

Sabarmati Ashram is the actual riverfront cottage and grounds where Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1930 and from which he launched the 1930 Salt March — Hriday Kunj, his personal quarters, and the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya museum sit exactly where the events happened, not a reconstruction.
The heritage core's mosques, including the 1424 Jama Masjid and the tiny Sidi Saiyyed Mosque with its famous jali lattice windows, remain active places of worship woven into the working old city rather than roped-off monuments.
Ahmedabad earned UNESCO City status for its old-city fabric, and a short trip out to the 15th-century Adalaj Stepwell or an evening at Kankaria Lake rounds out the heritage core with very different kinds of sights, all reachable within a couple of days.
Two active mosques a short walk apart in the Manek Chowk/Khadia heart of the old city — the grand 1424 Jama Masjid and the intricately carved Sidi Saiyyed Mosque.
Gandhi's riverfront ashram and Ahmedabad's largest lake, two very different waterside stops on opposite sides of the city.
The 15th-century Adalaj Stepwell excursion north of the city, paired with a lakeside stop back in Ahmedabad on the way in or out.
A short, walkable loop through Ahmedabad's old-city mosques, finishing at Sabarmati Ashram.
A day pairing Ahmedabad's two main waterside sights with a return to the old city in the afternoon.
An early start to the Adalaj Stepwell excursion, then back into the city for Gandhi's ashram and the old-city mosques.
The ashram grounds, Hriday Kunj (Gandhi's cottage) and the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya museum are open every day from 8am to 7pm, and the site draws around 700,000 visitors a year — arrive earlier in the day to avoid the busiest hours.
Official sourceThe stepwell sits about 18 km north of central Ahmedabad in Gandhinagar district — budget 45–60 minutes' drive each way and treat it as a separate half-day trip rather than something to fit between old-city sights.
Official sourceThe lakefront itself is a free walking and leisure spot, but the zoo (dating to 1951), the Atal Express toy train circling the 4.5 km shoreline, and the tethered "Ahmedabad Eye" balloon ride are each separately ticketed attractions.
Official sourceBuilt in 1424 and still active for daily worship, Jama Masjid's 15-domed prayer hall and courtyard are free to enter, but as at any functioning mosque, dress modestly and remove your shoes before stepping onto the prayer hall floor.
Official sourceThe carved stone lattice (jali) windows at the small Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, built in 1572–73, became the unofficial symbol of the city and inspired the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad's logo — worth the short stop even though the building itself is modest in size.
